Attendance
The academic year calendar is approved by the Head of School. The calendar must include a minimum of 175 instructional days.
The gates open each morning, Sunday through Thursday, at 7:30AM. The bell for students to enter school rings at 7:40 a.m. and classes begin at 7:45 a.m. The playschool and kindergarten programs are dismissed at 1:30 p.m. Grade 1 through 12th grade students are dismissed at 3:10 p.m. All students are expected to leave campus at 3:30 p.m.
- If a student returns from an absence he/she must supply the admissions office with a note excusing the absence. Such a note should include the student’s name, date(s) of absence and valid reasons for being absent, and his/her parent’s signature.
- If a student fails to bring a note (or a parent fails to contact the admissions office) within 48 hours, the absence will be considered unexcused and the student will not be permitted to make up the work he/she missed
- The only acceptable reason for missing school is severe illness
- Forging a school note is a serious offense and will not be tolerated at EMS. The consequence of forging a note is out of school suspension.
- Students are responsible for work missed during their absence;
- If a student has an extended absence, he/she can arrange to make up the work missed by contacting the teacher responsible and the administrative office.
Illness and Family Emergency
Illness and family emergencies are examples of excused absences. Before a student returns to his/her class, a note must be presented to the administrative office explaining the nature of his/her absence. If the reason of absence is medical, a doctor’s note is mandatory.
Excused absences may be made up and students are only allowed a 24-hour extension for each day they miss to make up the required assignments.
Family Travel or Personal Business
If a student is absent for family travel or personal business a note from the parents detailing the reason for and duration of absence is required by the administrative office in advance. Phone calls are not an acceptable method for advanced notification. Such requests for absence are considered unexcused if not presented before one week of travel.
All other absences are considered unexcused. Unexcused absences result in 0 credit for all assignments missed and there is no possibility to make up missed quizzes or tests.
Consecutive Days Absence
Parents will be sent an official notice with the school stamp on the 3rd, 7th and the 10th connected days absence.
On the 15th connected day the school will take a decision to dispel the student from the school and they can register once again only through the MOE representatives.
Alternating Days Absence
Students’ affairs will send an official letters to the parents to proclaim them of the students’ absence on the 7th, 15th, 21st and 28th disconnected days.
After the completion of the 30 disconnected days of absence, the school will take a decision to dispel the student from the school and they can register once again only through the MOE representatives.
If an AAC student is absent more than five days a quarter, he or she will not be permitted into the Quarter exam.
EMS and AAC students’ absence is calculated according to the attendance log on quick school, thereby making the deduction in CW grade uniform across all subjects.
Respect for time is an important skill for students to understand. Also, when a student arrives late to class they are a distraction to their classmates and to the teacher. The students are considered tardy if they are not present in class when it begins. The parents are equally responsible for ensuring their children’s on-time arrival at school. Tardiness is considered not being in class when the period begins. Tardiness applies to arrival at school and arrival to individual classes during the day.
10-Minute Rule: When a student arrives more than 10 minutes late to class, he/she will be marked absent for that class. Any three delays will be considered an absence.
If a parent wishes to have their students dismissed early from school, the parent must present him or herself before 12:00 pm at the administrative office and personally request their students’ early removal. A note from the parents is also acceptable if brought to the administrative office in the appropriate time.
Parents, who wish to excuse their children early, are responsible to cover all missed materials and follow up with their children. If the early dismissal is recurring a consent form must be signed by the parents indicating their responsibility.
A permission slip to leave campus will then be given to the students involved. Note: We do not accept telephone calls from parents for early dismissal.
Student absences for family travel or personal business must be arranged in advance. A note from the parents outlining the reason for and duration of the absence is to be presented to the principal. Phone calls are not acceptable for notification. Requests for absence for travel or business purposes with less than one-week notice may be considered unexcused.
Parents, who wish to travel, must sign a consent form indicating their acceptance and responsibility towards covering all missed materials and following up with their children.
In all other ways, absences for travel or business are to be handled in the same manner as absences for School Related Activities.
